Shawnee State’s Response to COVID-19

Shawnee State University is working closely with the Portsmouth City Health Department, Ohio Department of Health, regional Emergency Management Agency, local medical providers, and public universities in Ohio to make plans for the safe return to campus. Departments, courses and activities will return in a phased approach over the summer leading up to fall semester. The safety of students, faculty, professionals and staff is our top priority and all plans will be developed with this guiding principle in the forefront.

University Operations

Shawnee State has moved to remote instruction and remote work for summer semester, with a few exceptions in labs tied to health and science majors. 

While services are being provided remotely, limited areas and services remain open to the public on campus:

SSU Health Clinic

正规体育投注The SSU Health Clinic is closed for the summer. Operations will resume with classes in the fall.

Housing Units

正规体育投注Several units remain open for students living on campus. Contact Housing & Residence Life if you have questions or need assistance.

Massie Hall

正规体育投注This building is open from 8 am to 5 pm Monday–Friday for students who need access to the Student Success Center. A limited number of computers are available, with proper physical distance between each. We strongly recommend that students who have access to a computer and WIFI at home do not come to campus.

Morris University Center

Daily Hours of Operation
11 am–1 pm

Key card access has been installed to limit traffic to SSU students, faculty and staff. Students may entere the building through the north entrance using their student ID. Students using the facility are urged to practice physical distancing.

Bear’s Den

Take-out meals are available:

Every Day
Brunch: 11 am–1 pm
Dinner: 4 pm–6 pm

 

Student Business Center

The Student Business Center is operating remotely and is working to answer all financial aid and student billing questions. Email fin_aid@jamaltaher.com or sbc@jamaltaher.com with questions.

Other Departments and Services

Most departments and units have “moved to the cloud.” Shawnee State remains open with many employees working remotely. Department phones and emails will be answered and meetings are being held online. Over the summer, staff are returning to offices in a phased approach leading to fall semester.

Registration for Fall Semester

Registration for Fall semester remains open. Shawnee State intends to welcome students to return to campus in the fall of 2020.

Student Success Center

The Student Success Center is serving as a key resource to students during the transition to remote instruction. Students may email assist@jamaltaher.com or call (740) 351-4319. The service is staffed from 8 am to 5 pm Monday through Friday.

Tutoring

Tutoring and advising services for students are being provided remotely by the Student Success Center.

Library Services

Library services, including research assistance, continue remotely for the summer.

The Clark Memorial Library and Bear Cave are physically closed and all services have "moved to the cloud." The library staff is committed to supporting teaching, learning and student success. Events & Public Gatherings

Campus Events

All in-person campus events for the summer have been canceled or postponed. Ticket refunds and exchanges are available for Vern Riffe Center events. Call the McKinley Box Office at (740) 351-3600.

 

Travel Guidelines

University-sponsored Travel

Study Abroad

Study abroad programs are currently suspended.

Non-university Travel

Staff, faculty and students are requested to report their non-university travel outside the immediate area to travel@jamaltaher.com.

  1. Wear your mask. The use of masks is mandated for Ohio.
  2. Wash your hands with soap and water. .
  3. Avoid close contact with people who are sick and practice social distancing. Stay 6ft away from others.
  4. Stay home when you are sick.
  5. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
  6. Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces at home, work and school.
  7. Practice other good health habits — get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat right.
